The islands had been prepping for 5 years before they allowed people inside, just after the declaration of World War III. This is why they have a clear pecking order of people, a police group, advanced supplies, a power station, a library, a radio station etcOk, so the islands of Ultimus are off the coast near Land's End, Cornwall (of course this is all fictional lol). There is one big main island surrounded by four smaller ones. All can be walked to when the tide is out because the waters are shallow. On the main island is the huge government building and most of the 'shops', as well as some of accommodation for the people who live there. The three have more accommodation and places of work, almost like factories to produce food, medicine, clothing etc. One island is almost completely devoted to caring for livestock and farming. There is a normal water supply and sewage system as well as wind turbines and solar panels for power.

There is a black market to supply cigarettes and drugs and other goods, and it's deemed illegal on this island but the people in government use it too. The island has deemed it's self a Christian state, and mostly accepts those who are willing to become religiously ambiguous or to convert completely. They only accept healthy individuals onto the island, if anyone arrives too sick to work they are turned away. Healthcare is provided for those who become ill after time, but is bias towards the people who hold more power. Police brutality is common to keep the peace, even though it's a corrupt system. There are tighter laws about working hours and everyone is forced into labour for which they receive tickets. Sort of like arcade tickets in style, but these are used to purchase stuff.
The islands have a radio system to bring news, play music, tell stories to children, have adult radio shows with plotlines and actors etc to keep people happy with some form of entertainment. Each home is issued with a radio. The island also has a library with a huge collection of books collected over years. These two things are widely accepted, and the rebels decided to keep them unchanged if they came into power.

History: Brought up in a life of comfort and luxury, Cassie never really understood the struggles of real life, but was strictly controlled by her parents who pushed her to be successful in the future, seeing as she was in fact a mistake in the first place. When war broke out, they moved the the country and escaped the first nuke to hit London town, but anarchy ruled the mainland of Britain and their country home was soon looted. Her parents were killed and her brother managed to save them both and escape with a collection of belongings. Having heard of the Ultimus islands, they travelled to the coast and managed to trade some expensive items for a boat ride. Cassie now works in the main government building as a desk girl and general assistant to some of the highest ranked people on the islands, she is one of the key people involved in the rebel group because of this. Her wealthy upbringing and 'posh' ways has secured her this nicer job, otherwise she could have been doing labour like the majority of the population.

History: Like his sister, he was brought up in luxury. He was his parent's darling son, he studied at Oxford and he was all set to run his father's business. Although being spoilt, he always remained concious that he was very lucky. His parents annoyed him to no end and his father was often mean to his little sister, whom he adores. After managing to get to the Ultimus islands, he got a job being in charge of the farming estate of the group of islands, because his father was in charge of farming businesses and land. He and his sister live together in nicer accommodation than most and were one of the first few to join the rebel group. He saw the brutality of this new government and the way it treated the people who lived there and forced them to 'work to survive'. It was a dictatorship, and Miles wanted to fight for a democracy. He was reluctant to let his sister get involved, but they both knew she would be as valuable as he would be.

History: Not much is known about Kade's parents. He was an orphan and went through the care system in Ireland, being forced into Catholicism made him confused about his entire identify. He now resents religion in this new world, and is angry that upon making it to the Ultimus islands having lost all his friends along the way, he has to live in a majority Christian state where speaking against it is illegal. He works in the power station as an engineer to fix the turbines, panels or generators. He is also one of the founders of the rebel group, but isn't keen to socialise as friends among them. He drinks a lot as well.

History: He was brought up in a Christian, Republican family with firm values and beliefs. He was destined to be head of police at Missouri but when war broke out, he immediately volunteered his surfaces on the islands of Ultimus, knowing he'd secure a position of power. He's know head of the police system and enjoys giving out brutal orders and planning what to do about the growing, but quiet, rebel group. He is a key member of the government and is active in decisions and law making, and is just as quick as dishing out the punishments.
