Rafiki is one that embodens the spiritual, the insanity and wisdom that makes him an appealing character. (after all he does have a blue behind;))
What I like about Rafiki is that he's wise but is wise in the fact that he doesn't give straight answers. Except for the occasional hitting with stick on head. Plus he also had the sense of wisdom (once Mufasa directed him) to bring Kiara and Kovu together.
In fact, Rafiki is directly involved with the decisions of the main characters:
Simba reclaiming his throne, bringing together Kovu and Kiara and inciting his wisdom on Timon.
*Another thought*
Does anyone have the old Game Boy advance game of the Lion King? Involving Pumbaa and Timon as the main characters? In that, it's Rafiki who directs Pumbaa to follow Timon. So here's a question, could he have done that in the 1 1/2?
Wisdom outweighs any wealth
