Kion's Design

I was browsing a Russian TLK fansite where I came across an interesting discussion going on about Kion's markings in the bit of released footage we have of The Lion Guard. Since I don't recall seeing any discussion about it here on MLK, I thought it might be nice to share it here:

Take a look at this picture: http://pridelands.eu/hd/image23439.html

Even if we can somehow believe that Kion was able to be born with what are effectively lion paw prints as fur color discolorations on his limbs, what is up with that tatoo looking mark on his side?

Early images of the same scene don't have that mark, but when Disney released the same scene, but animated, Kion now has that mark. Here is the same picture, only the version when The Lion Guard was first announced: http://pridelands.eu/hd/image23419.html Kion doesn't have the mark here.

What do you guys think it is? The theory the Russians have cooked up is that it is the Lion Guard logo cooked up and painted on by Rafiki. Probably to increase tourist revenue.

I think they might have a point. ;)

Or is the mark something that will go away?

Since other members of the lion guard also have this marking I am 99% sure it's not a birthmark. Close to a year ago I came to the same conclusion that Rafiki painted it on.

Being that the other members of The Lion Guard seem to have this mark as well I agree with the consensus the the mark was painted on by Rafiki. It is likely a symbol for The Lion Guard.

I said this from the beginning that it was just a "tattoo" painted on by Rafiki. And NO ONE believed me! Even on here! And I won't say I was right...I'm just going to enjoy the satisfaction of being right and making others go "wow...guess that handsome and smart dude was right! Also he has great hair!"

Well I've seen multiple people here theorizing that it's a painted on symbol by Rafiki since before the mark was changed from a paw print to a lion's head, so yeah it's been talked about and people here have been in agreement for a very long time.

Personally, I'm waiting for the show to actually air. If we bank on it making sense, it will end up being some kind of nonsense, I'd bet.

Yeah, that's what i'm worried about. I know that the lion king has some mystical aspects to it but it's still relatively grounded in reality. I hope that since they are trying to educate that the more fantastical elements in the lion guard are kept to a minimum.

Yeah. That's the main reason why so many fans don't want the show to be canon. They don't want it to stray from how the movies were (Excluding 1 1/2) Also, if this IS painted on, EVERYTIME they get wet, Rafiki will have to paint them back on.

Perhaps Rafiki knows how to make water-resistant paint? These things do exist after all...

Joking aside, I do like the new lion's head design a lot better than the paw print, especially since Kion already seems to have those. I just home that Disney won't decide to change it again.

EDIT: Corrected "home" to "hope" :P
