Why wasn't Scar able to fend off the hyenas?

True, a bunch jumped at him, but several minutes earlier, right after Simba makes Scar confess that he killed Mufasa, a bunch of hyenas pile drive him and knock him over and he was able to fend them off. Why wasn't Scar able to do this too? At least, one would think that he'd have killed a few of the hyenas before they got him yet the shadows of his death scene seem to indicate that the hyenas suffered no casualties from attacking Scar.

Simba is a bit stronger than Scar. Plus, when the hyenas attacked Simba, he had some room to fight them off. Scar was cornered from every angle.

When the hyenas piled on Simba, the lionesses came quick to his defense and got them off of him. As for Scar, he did not have that luxury. He was being backed into a corner with less and less room to defend himself.

This, and also scar fell from a pretty high height and would of been more likely to also be incapacitated (he does mention earlier in the film that he already has a bad back).
