[Private] Shades of the Flame [w/ Iri]

[ xDDD lol I don't either usually but I'm always tired cuz college and not getting enough sleep ]

As the herd ran, Kaharabu locked her gaze on the injured impala, darting straight towards it. She saw a flash of red as her companion jumped to life, pelting along to steer the wounded doe away from any escape. Kaharabu closed in from the left side, panting. The chase was always the hardest. She didn't like running much. It seemed to last forever, but the impala's injury failed it, and Kaharabu got close enough to pounce. She did, and tackled the thing to the ground. At that point, it was over for the prey, who was no match against the lioness's strength and anger. She plunged her jaws down to snap over its muzzle, swiftly ending its life.

Chaltuu skidded to an abrupt halt as she watched Kaharabu quickly and most likely painlessly end the doe's life. She was a bit disappointed that she hadn't been fast enough to perhaps catch it herself, but she brushed that off. It wasn't a competition, after all, and it was food, something she would accept without hesitation. Unless it was from those peculiar creatures who walked on only two of their limbs. She knew all too well that those creatures sometimes ensnared famished lions and lionesses into traps with ungulate carcasses filled with lethal toxins, which would kill them in less than an hour after the lion- or any predator, really- consumed the meat. Her pride- correction, her former pride, rather- had lost two young, oblivious adolescents to a poisoned carcass... That, along with Chaltuu's hubristic personality, was the reason why she had a hard time eating the remains of something that she hadn't seen being killed.

As the dust settled, she lifted her head, letting the impala's head flop to the ground, lifeless. Swinging her gaze around, she spotted the red companion. Part of her had a selfish thought to just take the prey and run, but she knew that wouldn't end well. Shaking it from her mind she stepped back, ears twitching as she awaited the other lioness's approach. She'd not shared a meal in ages. It would be quite awkward, probably. Kaharabu lowered her nose to the carcass again, then flopped on her stomach with a satisfied grunt. Finally, some decent food. She began to tear into the haunch, expecting the other to begin as well.

[Um, just out of curiosity, when has she ever shared a kill with anyone?]

Chaltuu plodded over to the lioness and the kill and started to yank a chunk from the impala's shoulder, relishing the taste of the meat. The other feline was right- a full meal was better than chasing around dust mice and hyraxes, and even though they were sharing the prey, it was obvious that both would get enough to fill their stomachs. The remains of the carcass would be for the vultures or the hyenas, or for that matter any scavenger that was willing to fight over the scraps, she supposed... But the bright side of the situation was that they would be able to have a decent meal. However, a question nagged at the back of her mind... were they to work together now?

[ hahah her mother. and vultures n stuff. xD ]

The dark grey female ignored her surroundings while she ate, shoving her muzzle into the meat and eagerly enjoying herself for the moment. It was rather odd to see the red female out of the corner of her eye, and it startled her at times, so unused was she to the presence of others. But still, it had been worth it. Lifting her head, she swallowed another bite and stretched out, huffing a moment before snapping at the carcass again.

After the two lionesses had finished tearing off what they wanted from the ungulate carcass, the russet female lifted her head and glanced at the greyish feline who stood beside her. "I never caught your name," Chaltuu said gruffly. Her voice was noticeably less aggressive and resentful than usual, probably because that she supposed that the other lioness had caught them both a kill- for Chaltuu and perhaps for the other female too- her first decent meal in a couple of days. Chaltuu finally felt full and satisfied, something she had not felt in quite a while. Granted, she hadn't been starving, but certainly not as well-fed as she had been in other places- her former pride, for example.

Pausing again, Kaharabu lifted her head, in the middle of chewing. She swallowed and huffed, licking her muzzle. After a moment she spoke. "It's Kaharabu," she drawled out with a slight nod, her eyes flickering across the rusty female's face. "And you are?" she went on stiffly, thoughtfully lowering her nose to the carcass again and mouthing on it before taking another nibble. Her tail swept around to rest against her haunches as she waited for the other's response.

"Hmm... they call me Chaltuu," the rusty-red female replied curtly. Kaharabu... it wasn't a name she commonly heard. She wondered what had happened to Kaharabu to make her so battered up. Granted, she was a gruff rogue like Chaltuu herself, so they most likely came from skirmishes with other rogues and loners. The russet lioness dipped her head to rip off another chunk of the impala's flesh, chewing it thoroughly before swallowing it. She supposed she ought to eat while she could... a meal never lasted forever. "Now that all the pleasantries are done and out of the way, where should we go next?" she asked tersely, spitting out the word pleasantries as if it were the most atrocious thing that the world had to offer.

She twitched an ear at the response, slowly munching on her mouthful before growing silent, tongue flicking over her teeth to clean any remnants of meat. She was getting comfortably full. Grunting, she licked at the carcass, slowly mouthing and gnawing on the tough muscle, not quite sure if she wanted to take another bite or not. It was nice just to suck on the tasty stuff. Hearing the red lioness speak up again, Kaharabu lifted her head, her tattered ears pricking forwards. "We?" she started, tone dull. "I didn't think this was long-term," she sniffed gravelly, her orange gaze darting over Chaltuu with something close to dislike.

"Yeah, neither did I. Not like we're chums or some rubbish like that," Chaltuu retorted snappishly. "So never mind that." She didn't feel disappointed- she didn't care at all, really. It had mostly been a slip-up; she had never really meant to say what she had. It didn't matter. She preferred to remain solitary rather than being accompanied by others, after all. She returned Kahrabu's frosty gaze, which was filled with dislike, before rising to her paws and rolling her shoulders back and flexing her claws. She felt content with just slacking off for a bit and resting, but supposed that wouldn't pay off in the future. She had to get moving again.
