Austin Grey
I shook my head slightly when I saw Katherine wouldn't come up here to wave. Did she not just hear our mentor? He said that if we wanted to survive the Games, we had to have sponsors. Waving at these people would definitely get us some sponsors.
I stifled a laugh at our mentor's remark about keeping the fork. Sure, it was pretty sharp, but unless you were in hand-to-hand combat, you wouldn't be able to do much damage with it.
I followed Liana, Katherine, and our mentor off the train. The Capitol was dazzling - even better then I had imagined it to be. We walked up to our rooms in the training center, which wasn't a long way away, since we were District 1. A few minutes later, Liana came tapping on hist door, saying the prep team was here. Great. Now was when the preparations began. Tonight would be the tribute parade, when each tribute had to wear something that represented their district. District 1's was luxury, and most of the time we wore something very glittery. I wasn't a big fan of sparkly things, but I had to put up with whatever they had. I just hoped no one would mock me for it.
Amelia Fredrick
I sat in my room, waiting for the good-byes. I kept hoping this wasn't true, but I knew, whether I liked it or not, that it was real, and there was nothing I could do about it. The door opened, and I sensed tnat it was my family who came in.
"Five minutes," the Peacekeeper said. My family came running up to me and hugged me.
"I'm so sad to see you go," my mother said. "Despite your blindness, you've always been a strong, brave little girl. And you can be so in the arena, too. You just have to not let your blindness get in the way."
"I won't," I answered. My dad was next.
"Good luck, Amy," he said. "Hey, don't be afraid to make allies. Even though you may one day have to kill them, it's better than being in the open." He kissed my forehead, and Thomas came up. He hugged me hard, and I could feel his tears streaming down onto my dress.
"Sissy come back, right?" He asked. "Sissy not give up?"
"I'll try to win," I told him. "For you. Be good for Mommy and Daddy." I held him close to me and hugged him tightly. The doors opened, and I had to let them go.
"Good-bye, Amelia. And good luck!" My father said as they walked out. My mother and brother said good-bye, and then the door closed, but it re-opened within a few minutes.
"Amelia!" Melinda exclaimed, wheeling her chair up to me. "I'm so sorry," she said while we hugged. "I-I shoul dhave volunteered or something. I shouldn't have judt left you there, helplesss."
"Hey, it's alright," I told.her. "It's better anyways if I go than you, because I don't have to worry about getting caught on branches or something, and I can climb things. I'm glad it wasn't your name." I realized we were still hugging, and I pulled out of it, not because I didn't like it, but because I had something important to say. "Take care of Tom for me, please. My mom was thinking about getting a job soon, but she needs someone to baby-sit Thomas. Do you think you could do that?"
"Of course," Melinda answered. "Anything for my friend. Oh, and I almost forgot," she was loooking for something. Her fingers found it, and she pulled it out. "Can you take this as your district token?"
"I grabbed it, and felt around it to try and figure out what it was. It was a pin. "What symbol does it have on it?" I asked.
"A wounded bird in flight," she answered. "To show the others that, despite the fact that we have disabilities, we're stronger than they think."
I smiled, and hugged her. The Peacekeeper opened the door and said time was up. We said good-bye, and she wheeled out of the room. No one else came, and soon I was forced out of the room, but I kept thinking about what Melinda said the pin's meaning was. [i]Despite the fact that we have disabilities, we're stronger than they think.[i] Ues we were. And I would show everyone that.
(Alright. Since we're spending the most time with Katherine and Austin, I don't mind them being the victors. I'll.keep that in mind. Thanks for teling me. ^_~ When we finish the Games (I know that's a ways away, but I wanted to ask this now), do you think maybe we might continue it (likea a 'Book 2')?)
