Janja is the main antagonist of the 2015 TV film The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and one of the main villains of it's 2016 follow-up series The Lion Guard. He is the leader of a clan of hyenas who resident in The Outlands and are descendants of the clan Shenzi, Banzai and Ed were part of.

The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar

Janja first appears in the series' pilot film The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar where he is seen in his lair chewing on a bone whilst being watched on by his clan. Upon noticing Bunga nearby, Janja decides that he will be his lunch and orders two of his clan members Cheezi and Chungu to bring Bunga to him. However, this fails as Bunga's friend Kion uses the Roar of the Elders to save his friend.

Later, Janja is angry at Cheezi and Chungu for failing to capture Bunga. Just then, a vulture named Mzingo arrives and tells Janja that Kion has been made leader of the Lion Guard (a team who protect the Pride Lands and defend the Circle of Life) by his father King Simba. Having heard of the Lion Guard, Janja via singing "Tonight We Strike", reveals his plan for him and his clan to hunt down as many of the Pride Lands' animals as they can before the new Lion Guard is formed.

Later that day, Janja along with his clan and Mzingo attack a gazelle herd and end up causing a stampede, trapping Kion's older sister Kiara. Luckily, Kion along with Bunga and their fellow Lion Guard members Fuli, Beshte and Ono, save Kiara and battle the hyenas. Kion then uses the Roar of the Elders to blast Janja and his clan away back to the Outlands, with Janja swearing vengeance.
